Nutrition
Our findings indicate that
50% of children were malnourished and out of those
25% were severely malnourished.
(data based on standard CDC growth curves).
Severe malnutrition
the unexpected findings of severely growth-retarded
otherwise healthy children was striking.
Multivitamins and infant formula were provided to the
families and tracking of the children's growth and weight
was initiated.
Immunization
despite efforts of UNICEF and of the local outreach
program actual delivery of vaccinations to the children
remains a challenge.
From basic transport, through proper administration and
record keeping the immunization program is vividly
unable to meet the demands.
It was not uncommon to come across children who have
never been vaccinated.
Vaccine delivery
Thanks the UNICEF donated vaccines and generosity of
Aniverana Hospital vaccines such as:
oral polio, measles, diphteria-tetanus and hepatitis B
were administered to the children.
Secondly, the local staff was educated about proper
administration of the vaccines.
Proper vaccination records remain a challenge to be
addressed.
General assessment
consisted of plotting every child's weight, height and
head circumference on the growth curve, complete
physical exam, treatment of malnutrition and infectious
disease such as malaria and providing vaccinations.
We have collected complete set of data on
approximately 120 children.
Malaria
we still found lack of preventive mosquito nets,
inadequate therapy in a chloroquine resistant malaria
region, and high frequency of reported repetitive malaria
infections.
We were very pleased to see that a new regional
initiative for proper drug resistant malaria was underway.
Children with congenital
malformations
There were number of children with various congenital ailments
which have never been addressed.
The children of Maventibao and surrounding villages were medically assessed. In all, approximately 120 children
were thoroughly evaluated. This including assessing their medical needs, measuring growth parameters,
performing physical exam and providing medical treatment for any illnesses.
Clinics set up in three villages with Malagassy coming from the region within 25 mile radius: Maventibao,
Tennenbao, Ambunimafay, etc.
Number of Pediatric Patients Seen: 120 Number of Boys: 52 Number of Girls: 68
Number of Patients Malnourished: 58 Number of Patients Severely Malnourished: 27
Vaccines Given: Oral Polio, DTC (Diptheria, tetanus, hepatitis B), VAR (measles)
Diseases Seen/Treated:
Malnutrition- secondary to diet mostly consisting of rice-water, poorly nourished breast-feeding mothers, and
poverty. Poor diet was accentuated in non-farming communities such as Maventibao.
Malaria- very prevalent ailment among children. Individuals often infected over 10 times per year. Poor
prevention with limited mosquitoe nets and other preventive measures. Malaria was evident in the children with
the presenting signs of fever without source, splenomegaly, and anemia as evidence with pallor.
Worms/ Intestinal Parasites- presumption secondary to frequent use of stream water as water source without
boiling water. Signs and symptoms included protuberant abdomens, diarrhea, and weight loss.
Skin Infections
Otitis Media
Bilharziosis- bloody urine- tx with praziquantel PO, etamsylate IM Congenital syphilis?
Dental care
Lack of preventive dental care and treatment was clearly visible
among many children. Number of children with poor dentition
was quite staggering.
Basic toothbrushing program for school children was initiated.
