As nearly 50 percent of its population is malnourished,reduction in malnutrition in the region is one of MHI’s primary goals.

Chronic child malnutrition is a well known and unresolved problem in Madagascar.

August 2009; 16 month old girl weight 6 kg/ height 72 cm –chronically malnourished without treatment has grave prognosis for normal development.

An international volunteer is vaccinating a mother against tetanus.  Unfortunately, neonatal tetanus is still on the list of frequent causes of infant mortality in Madagascar.  The vaccination of pregnant women and women in childbearing age can easily prevent death due to neonatal tetanus.

The local nurse is vaccinating a child.  Common vaccinations given include polio, tetanus, hepatitis B and measles.

Breast feeding is encouraged for all mothers to reduce the infant mortality.

Dental exams frequently reveal very poor dentition which contributes to the reduced life expectancy seen in Madagascar.

In global collaboration with organizations such as - Permanent Mission of Madagascar to the UN, - United Nation's Public-Private Alliance for Rural Development (UNPPA), Madagascar Ministry of Health, UNICEF, United Nations Youth Program, DTNcares, Africatelehealth, Public-Private Alliance Foundation, Sepsis AllianceUnited Nations-Student Association-Maastricht and other local, national and international organizations, we are taking on the challenge of improving health and lives in remote areas of Northern Madagascar. We support the official Madagascar Action Plan (MAP) to meet the millennium development goals set by the UN.
